Berengaria of León
Berengaria of León , also called Berenguela (* 1204 ; † April 12, 1237 in Constantinople ), was an empress of the Latin Empire of Constantinople . She was a daughter of King Alfonso IX. of León and Queen Berenguela of Castile from the House of Burgundy-Ivrea , her brother was King Ferdinand III , who was later canonized . of Castile and Leon .
Berengaria was married in Toledo in 1224 to the much older Johann von Brienne , the ex-king of Jerusalem. While her husband fought in Italy against his son-in-law, Emperor Friedrich II , she lived temporarily in Paris at the court of her aunt, Queen Blanka of France . After John was elected their emperor by the Latin barons of Greece in 1229, Berengaria traveled with him to Constantinople in 1231, where they were crowned in Hagia Sophia .
According to a document from Maubuisson Abbey , Berengaria died just days after her husband. Their children together were:
- Alfons of Akkon († 1270), who married Marie d'Issoudun, Countess of Eu, and became Count of Eu as a husband , and also Grand Chamberlain of France;
- Johann von Akkon († 1296), who became the grand cupid of France in 1258;
- Ludwig von Akkon († 1297), who married Agnes of Beaumont and when her husband became Vice Count of Beaumont;
- Maria († 1275), ⚭ 1229/1234 with Emperor Balduin II of Constantinople .
