Vegetative characteristics

The mountain sandwort is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 35 centimeters. It is sparsely branched, prostrate or upright. The vegetative parts of the plant are covered with simple hairs ( indument ). The opposite leaves are elongated-lanceolate or linear and rolled up at the edge.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from February to May, rarely until August. The subspecies Arenaria montana subsp. intricata occur in the inflorescence in addition to simple glandular hairs.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are ovate or lanceolate and pointed with a length of 5 to 9 millimeters. The petals are longer than the sepals. The five white petals are 5 to 14 millimeters long.

The capsule fruit is spherical-ovoid with a length of 5 to 10 millimeters. The black or gray seeds are round kidney-shaped.

Occurrence

The mountain sandwort occurs in Morocco and in south-western Europe . Locations are given for Morocco, Spain , Portugal and France . It grows on rocky locations if they are shaded, as well as in open forests and on shrubbery.

Systematics

The first publication of Arenaria montana took place in 1755 by Carl von Linné in Centuria I. Plantarum ... 1, page 12. A homonym is Arenaria montana Sieber ex Steud. published in 1840 in Nomenclature Botanique , 2nd edition, 1, page 125. The specific epithet montana means "growing on the mountain".

Some authors have two subspecies of Arenaria montana :

  • Arenaria montana subsp. montana : It occurs in Morocco , Portugal , Spain and France . It usually has no glands on the pedicels. The sepals are membranous on the edge.
  • Arenaria montana subsp. intricata (Ser.) Pau (Syn .: Arenaria montana var. intricata Ser. , Arenaria linearifolia Poir. ): It occurs only in Spain . It has glandular flower stalks. The sepals are without a membranous margin.
