The Bergisel Association , founded in Innsbruck in 1954, saw itself as a protective alliance for the rights of South Tyroleans .

prehistory

After the First World War, South Tyrol became part of Italy through the Treaty of St. Germain on October 10, 1920 . Even after the end of World War II , the Italian state continued the Italianization policy it had begun during fascism in South Tyrol: Newly built social housing was almost exclusively reserved for Italians, as were the jobs in the Bozen industrial zone (see History of South Tyrol ).

founding

The Bergisel Association was founded on March 5, 1954 in Innsbruck. The founding members included Eduard Reut-Nicolussi , Edeltraut Straffner-Pickl and Benedikt Posch . Franz Gschnitzer , Eugen Thurnher and Eduard Widmoser formed the board .

In 1954 the federation had 8,000 members, by the end of the 1950s there were already 30,000.

Members of the Bergisel Federation, including Wolfgang Pfaundler , founded the North Tyrolean parliamentary group of the South Tyrol Liberation Committee , often also called the South Tyrol Freedom Legion (FLS) , in 1957 .
