Leopold Steurer (* 1946 in Sterzing , South Tyrol , Italy ) is an Italian historian who deals with the regional history of the 19th and 20th centuries in South Tyrol. At the beginning of the 1980s, Steurer made significant contributions to coming to terms with the era of National Socialism in the region.

Life

Leopold Steurer, son of a tenant family from Sterzing , grew up on a farm. In 1966 he graduated from the Realgymnasium in Brixen and then began studying history , German , philosophy and political science at the universities of Vienna and Bonn . In 1975 he received his doctorate with a dissertation submitted in Vienna on the history of South Tyrol between 1919 and 1939. In 1976 he returned to South Tyrol and started teaching there. From 1981 until his retirement in 2010 he taught as a high school professor for history and philosophy at the secondary school in Bozen. In addition to his work as a historical researcher and mediator, Steurer was also politically active in the 1980s in the environment of the green alternative movement around Alexander Langer ; he was personally acquainted with Langer from his high school days.

In his main work South Tyrol between Rome and Berlin 1919–1939 (1980), Steurer outlines the effects of the alliance policy between the German Reich and fascist Italy , which culminated in a resettlement agreement for South Tyrol ( option ) in 1939 . In his remarks, Steurer follows the research approach of the historian Claus Gatterer , from whose work he was substantially inspired. In 2011, together with Günther Pallaver, he presented a comprehensive anthology on the history and reception of the South Tyrolean resettlement. In this volume more recent partial results of the relevant research on the topic are processed, which go back to Steurer's thematic impulses from the 1980s.
