Between 1840 and 1848 the gatehouses were built at the city entrances (Berlin, Güstower, Lübecker, Wismarsche and Wittenburg city gates) to Schwerin in order to be able to raise an excise duty (internal duty or tax on consumer goods).
The Berlin gates were built in 1844 in a classical style based on plans by court architect Georg Adolph Demmler . The two identical gatehouses , designed in the style of a Greek temple , are characterized by the classicistic portico of a simple Ante temple with two smooth Doric column shafts with a simple capital , above the two-part entablature with the architrave and the triglyph frieze. The protruding gable triangle or tympanum with the cornice on a pontic with a tooth cut .
The gatehouses stand over a piped arm of the Seeke, a stream that connects the Ostorfer See over the Pfaffenteich with the Burgsee .
In 1871 the German Empire became a unified customs and trading area and the gates lost their importance.
As a former gate or customs houses in Schwerin are still the Güstrower gatehouses , Werderstraße 1.2 (Demmlerbauten), the field goal later gatehouse and inn at the Old Cemetery ( Obotritenring 245/247), as well as the customs house at the Packhof 1a; also the customs house at Alte Crivitzer Landstrasse 27, which was converted into a residential building, and the gatehouse at Wittenburger Strasse 55 (Demmlerbau), which was heavily converted into a residential building .
