The Berliner Wanderclub e. V. (BWC), registered in the register of associations of the Charlottenburg District Court (VR 3755), was founded on November 9, 1894 in Berlin as the Berlin Harz Association, a branch of the Harz Club . It is therefore the oldest mountain and hiking club in Berlin. The first chairman was the teacher Friedrich Rapmund. Initially, the association was a collecting basin for exiled people from the Harz , the activity was geared towards hikes in Berlin and in the Mark Brandenburg as well as in more distant areas of Central Germany . With the Second World WarThe association lost its activity, an attempt to revive former association members failed in 1951. In October 1964, the association was re-established as the Harz Club Berlin by Volkher Kerl and some colleagues and entered into the association register on September 15, 1966. In 1990 the club changed its name to the Berliner Wanderclub , but remained an extraordinary member of the Harz Club .

The association maintains activities in Berlin and the Harz Mountains. According to its statutes , in addition to taking care of hiking and folk culture, it is active in nature and environmental protection as well as in path work.

The association has been a member of the German Hiking Association since January 1st, 2008 . As early as 1982, the association was a founding member of the Berliner Wanderbund, an amalgamation of Berlin local groups of regional associations of the German Hiking Association, which dissolved again in 2004. In 1989, the Harz Club Berlin organized the German Hiking Day in Berlin as part of the Berliner Wanderbund . The club is also a member of the Berlin Hiking Association. In 1990 the association was a founding member of the Berlin-Brandenburg-Bund, which stopped its work in 2006.
