Bernard "Berend" Carp (born April 17, 1901 in Pekalongan , Dutch East Indies , † July 22, 1966 in Hout Bay , South Africa ) was a Dutch sailor .

Career

Bernard Carp took part in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp , where he was a crew member of the Oranje alongside Petrus Wernink , and his brother Joop Carp was the skipper . The only competitor in the regatta was the French boat Rose Pompon from skipper Albert Weil . Since the Rose Pompon was delayed due to problems with customs, the first of three races was not held. The second and third races were won by the Orange , so that the Carp brothers and Wernink became Olympic champions .

Carp was a director at the spirits manufacturer Lucas Bols and moved to Cape Town in 1946 to manage the company's distillery. His brother Joop later followed him to South Africa . He undertook several ornithological expeditions in what is now Namibia and published a book called I Choose Africa .
