Bernardino Lonati
Bernardino Lonati (also Bernardino Lunati or Bernardino Lunate ; * 1451 or 1452 in Pavia ; † August 7, 1497 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
He was the son of Condottiere Antonio Lonati and his wife Filippina Beccaria. Like other members of his family, Bernardino Lonati became the protégé of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza , who had a decisive influence on his life. Cardinal Sforza made an emphatic request to the Pope for Lunati's rebellion.
In the consistory of September 20, 1493 Pope Alexander VI. made him cardinal deacon , and he received on September 23, 1493 the cardinal's hat and the pro illa vice downgraded to titled diaconia titular church San Ciriaco alle Terme Diocleziane . As a further benefice he received the administration of the diocese of Aquino in 1495 .
He was ordained a priest shortly after his cardinal elevation. He also followed Cardinal Sforza in his political conflict with the Pope. On December 9, 1494 he was after an audience with Alexander VI. arrested with Cardinals Ascanio Sforza and Federico Sanseverino and Prospero Colonna . On December 11th of the same year he attended the consistory and was sent to Ostia. On December 31, 1494, he found himself accompanying King Charles VIII of France when he entered Rome. After the agreement of the Pope with the King of France on January 15, 1495, Bernardino Lonati left Rome with Cardinal Sforza and returned with him on February 21 of the same year. Bernardino Lonati accompanied the Pope to Orvieto on May 27, 1495 and returned with him on June 27 of the same year.
In the conflict with the Orsini and other noble families of Italy who were about to take Rome, Bernardino Lonati was assigned as a companion to the Duke of Gandía and Urbino, the commander in chief of the papal troops. They left Rome on October 28, 1496 and fought battles in Anguillara, Galera, Bassano, SutriCampagnano, Formello, Sacrofano, Cesena, Viana and Bleda.
In May 1497, Bernardino Lonati had a severe fever from which he was never to recover. He died in Rome on August 7, 1497 at the age of 45. His patron Ascanio Sforza held the exequies and had his friend erect a magnificent tomb in the Roman church of Santa Maria del Popolo , in which Bernardino Lonati was buried.
