Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas
Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas , also: Bernardo Sandoval Rojas , (born April 20, 1546 in Aranda de Duero , † December 7, 1618 in Madrid ) was Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Toledo from 1599 to 1618 and Cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas came from the Spanish nobility. Both parents held positions at the court of Charles V and Philip II . The family was not wealthy, however. As a later son, he decided to pursue an ecclesiastical career. He was promoted by his uncle Cristóbal de Rojas y Sandoval , who was successively bishop of several influential Spanish dioceses . Similar to his uncle, he was appointed bishop by the Spanish king in 1586. Even if he tried to achieve a Christian renewal in the sense of the Council of Trent in his dioceses, at the same time he felt so committed to his family that he in turn promoted several nephews. As sharply as today such nepotism is condemned, it was common in the early modern period. According to the understanding of the time, kinship was an obligation to look after the material well-being and the advancement of less well-to-do relatives.
In accordance with this understanding at the time, Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas also enjoyed patronage . When his distant nephew Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas rose to the rank of influential minister under King Philip III. rose, he made sure that his uncle was appointed cardinal in 1599 . Since the appointment was initiated not by the Pope but by the King, Bernardo can be called the Crown Cardinal . He was the first Spaniard to be called in this way. Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas was therefore always more committed to the Spanish royal court than to the curia during his cardinalate . He never visited Rome. From 1608 to 1618 he was Grand Inquisitor of Spain.
