Bernd Asmus (born March 22, 1959 in Marburg ) is a German composer and university lecturer .

Career

Asmus began studying guitar at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen in 1980 , followed by studies in musicology at the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg from 1984 to 1986 and in composition and music theory at the local music academy from 1985 to 1989 . As a scholarship holder, he then took various composition courses, e. B. during the Dartington International Summer School (1987) or the Darmstadt Summer Courses (1988). In 1986 he won first prize at the Styrian Autumn composition competition for the Malay love songs , and in 1993 he won another first prize at the composition competition in Guéret for KNELL .

One focus of Asmus' activities is teaching. In 1989 he followed a teaching position for music theory at the Karlsruhe University of Music and finally held the professorship for music theory and new media there from 1993 to 2001. Asmus has been Professor of Music Theory at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts since 2001 . 1992-1993, he also took the chair of music theory at the Freiburg Music Academy and was 2001-2002 DAAD - a guest lecturer at the Universitas Negeri in Indonesian Medan . From 2003 to 2006 he helped to set up a composition course at the Universitas Pelita Harapan in Tangerang .

He is also a member of the Society for Music & Aesthetics , in whose magazine some of his texts have appeared.

music

Asmus' catalog of works mainly contains pieces for smaller ensembles or even solo works as well as a small portion of vocal music . The majority of his pieces are characterized by a strong differentiation of various musical parameters (including rhythm , articulation , overall sound, playing technique, etc.). In particular, the search for new possibilities within microintervalism is evident in many of his works, for example in Gewölk or Zeitbrunnen . Furthermore, a focus in Asmus' oeuvre is on non-European music and its embedding in the context of European music tradition; Tanzmusik I or gending lembut, gending hanyat can be used as examples . In addition, some pieces seek a connection between music and dance, which u. a. in the dance music series or works such as se sont penchés dessus ... can be seen. Further compositions attempt to initiate a reflection on perceptual processes, e.g. B. KNELL .
