career

The defender Schuhmann was signed for the 1984/85 season by manager Günter Netzer and trainer Ernst Happel from Hamburger SV . He came to the Hamburgers from SVG Einbeck from the Association League Lower Saxony and had also drawn attention to himself in the state cup in the games against Württemberg, Bavaria and Rhineland in the Lower Saxony selection . Even though he was no longer a youthful footballer at the age of 25, Schuhmann was given the chance to prove himself in professional football, although a serious injury threw him back during the season. So he only made three Bundesliga appearances and two UEFA Cup appearances . In addition to Schuhmann, HSV signed Mark McGhee , Christian Hofmeister , Gérard Plessers (during the current round) and Erik Solér . None of the newcomers was a direct hit and HSV finished 5th at the end of the round.

The former amateur from Einbeck experienced his first competitive game on October 3, 1984 in a 2-0 home win in the UEFA Cup against FC Southampton, when he was substituted on in the 63rd minute. Seven days later he made his debut in a 4-0 home win against Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga. Schuhmann formed the defense with Manfred Kaltz , Ditmar Jakobs and Bernd Wehmeyer in front of goalkeeper Uli Stein as a stopper. With his third and last Bundesliga appearance on June 8, 1985, a 2-0 home win against FC Schalke 04, he said goodbye to the Bundesliga and Hamburger SV and moved to Altona 93 in the Oberliga Nord. Under coach Willi Reimann , the AFC took 4th place and Schuhmann played at the side of goalkeeper Jürgen Stars , Jens-Peter Box and Wolfgang Kampf in 22 league games. He made his debut in the dress of the team from the Adolf-Jäger-Kampfbahn on August 24, 1985 in the DFB Cup against the Bundesliga club Fortuna Düsseldorf, where the team from the Lower Rhine won 3-2 in extra time.

Bernd Schuhmann played for the team from Bahrenfeld up to and including the 1989/90 season in the Oberliga Nord.
