etymology

Surname

The place took its name from the independent village of Ringheim, which died out at the beginning of the 16th century. Earlier spellings are Ringelheim and Ringenheim . The name is probably of Alemannic origin and originally ended with ingen .

history

The old Ringheim

The extinct village was west of Großostheim. It was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. Archaeological excavations confirmed that there was a settlement there in prehistoric times. Already in the 16th century the place fell desolate after a plague epidemic . Ringenheim was mentioned in writing for the last time in 1499. The Ringheimer Mühle is the last remaining property of the old Ringheim.

The so-called Hexenkirchhof was located in the former Ringheimer Schlag forest department on the edge of the Großostheimer Unterwald near the former municipal sand pit. Today the club building of TSV Ringheim is located on the sand pit area.

The new Ringheim

The new Ringheim was built after 1945 on the site of the former air force airfield about 2 km northwest of the original village. After several years of negotiations, the settlement plan was approved with the construction of 230 houses. On July 7, 1950, the new settlement was given the official name Ringheim in memory of the medieval village on whose territory it was built. The church and school were initially set up in emergency shelters. In 1974 the Pius Church was consecrated. Rapid development with industrial settlements has turned what was initially a small district into a handsome settlement.
