Bernd Walter Scheithauer

Bernd Walter Scheithauer (born August 30, 1946 in Gelenau ; † September 19, 2011 in Rochester (Minnesota) ) was an important German-American neuropathologist .

Life

Bernd W. Scheithauer was born in 1946 to Walter and Renate Scheithauer in Gelenau, Saxony , and grew up in Eureka (California) . After graduating from Humboldt State College in Arcata , he studied medicine at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine . He completed residency and fellowship as a clinical pathologist and neuropathologist at the Medical Center of Stanford University in Palo Alto . In 1979 he began his work in the Department of Anatomical Pathology and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was Professor of Pathology for many years .

Bernd Walter Scheithauer died on September 19, 2011 at the age of 65.

Scheithauer was the author of numerous textbooks on neuropathology, played a key role in the creation of the WHO classification of tumors of the central nervous system and was involved in over 700 publications, particularly on the neuropathology of brain tumors .
