Berndt Schaller

John Berndt Schaller (born August 28, 1930 in Heidelberg ; † May 1, 2020 in Göttingen ) was a German Protestant theologian and Judaist .

Live and act

Berndt Schaller was in 1961 at the University of Goettingen to the Dr. theol. did his doctorate and then worked there as a scientific assistant to Joachim Jeremias , Academic Council and Senior Councilor. In 1980 he qualified as a professor for "Judaic Studies including its importance for New Testament science". In 1984 he was appointed adjunct professor, in 1993/1994 he was dean of the theological faculty, in 1994 he was appointed university lecturer and in 1995 he retired. He was also a deputy professor in Heidelberg (1979/1980), Hamburg (1981/1982) and Tübingen (1989) as well as visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1990/1991).

From 1985 to 1997, Schaller was a member of the Church and Judaism Commission of the Evangelical Church in Germany . From 1998 to 2007 he was Protestant President of the German Coordination Council of Societies for Christian-Jewish Cooperation .
