Bernhard Gelderblom
Bernhard Gelderblom (born March 9, 1943 in Schwetz (Weichsel) ) is a German historian and author .
Act
After studying Protestant theology , history and politics, Gelderblom worked as a teacher at the Albert Einstein Grammar School in Hameln until 2006 .
Based on his documentation of the tombstones of the Jewish cemetery in Hameln in the 1980s, Gelderblom presented the results of his research into the fate of Hamelin Jews during the Nazi era in 1997 in the book “They were citizens of the city”. The preliminary conclusion of his diverse research work, for which he established contact in particular with former Hamelin Jews and their descendants, was the comprehensive work “The Jews of Hamelin from their beginnings in the 13th century to their extermination by the Nazi regime” in 2011. For this he organized various exhibitions.
Another area of research was the uncovering of the fate of the inmates of the Hamelin penitentiary from 1942 to 1945, especially those from the Benelux countries. As a result, he researched the fate of the victims of the Nazi regime in the city of Hameln and in the district of Hameln- Pyrmont , which he documented in a memorial book and portraits of forced laborers.
In 2010 he founded the Association for Regional Cultural and Contemporary History Hameln eV, which he has chaired since then. Since 2013 he has been initiating and organizing the laying of stumbling blocks in and around Hameln with the association .
Bückeberg
With a paper from 1998 and a subsequent exhibition about the Reichserntedankfeste on the Bückeberg , Gelderblom first drew attention to the historical significance of this mass event. At the beginning of 2001 he applied to put the Bückeberg under monument protection because of its historical importance . From 2016 he headed the two-year project "Documentation Bückeberg" to prepare the documentation and learning site in Bückeberg . The centerpiece is the circular route designed by Gelderblom with text and picture boards, later called the "historical-topographical information system", on the former festival site. In March 2018, the district council of the Hameln-Pyrmont district approved the implementation of the project by the "Documentation and Learning Place Bückberg gGmbH" to be founded. Since the preparatory information events of the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture from 2009 on the protection of monuments, a fundamental criticism by the local population has solidified against the project on the Bückeberg . It was presented in information events, letters to the editor, newspaper advertisements and signature lists and was reinforced by a survey of residents decided by the local council. Gelderblom defended himself with clear words against the criticism from the municipality and district council. Even after a compromise brokered by District Administrator Tjark Bartels in November 2018 , the initially suspended residents survey and its significance for the further implementation of the project remains open.
Awards / honors
For his work, Bernhard Gelderblom was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 2008 and the Obermayer German Jewish History Award in 2009.
