Bernhard Achitz

Bernhard Achitz (born July 20, 1965 in Vienna ) is an Austrian trade unionist . From 2008 to 2019 he was Senior Secretary of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB). Since July 1, 2019, as an ombudsman nominated by the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), he has been responsible for the areas of social affairs, care and health.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1983, Bernhard Achitz began studying law , which he completed in 1990 as a master's degree at the University of Vienna . After the court year he worked in the social policy department of the Vienna Chamber of Labor until 1997 . He then headed the department for social policy of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB) until 2007 . From 2008 he was chief secretary of the ÖGB, since 2009 he has also been a member of the board of directors of the ÖGB and is also a board member of the Federal Chamber of Labor .

Bernhard Achitz works for the ÖGB in various positions in labor market administration and health administration. From 1999 to 2008 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Austrian Employment Service.

In the Main Association of Austrian Social Insurance he was from 2001 Member of the Board since 2005. He is a member of the association's board since 2006 and the first deputy chairman. Since April 1, 2019, he has been a member and deputy chairman of the transition committee of the General Accident Insurance Fund (AUVA).

From June 30, 2003 to January 31, 2005, Bernhard Achitz was a representative of the ÖGB in the Fundamental Rights Committee of the Austria Convention .

As a delegation member at several annual meetings of the International Labor Organization (ILO) as well as congresses of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), he also advocated trade union and human rights at the international level.

In the National Council elections in 2013 and 2017 , he ran for the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) on the federal list.

Ombudsman

On April 5, 2019, he was nominated by the Federal Party Presidium of the SPÖ to succeed Günther Kräuter as Ombudsman . On June 6, 2019, the three ombudsmen were proposed by the main committee of the National Council for the term of office beginning July 1, 2019 and lasting until June 30, 2025 ; on June 13, 2019, they were elected by the National Council. On June 25, 2019, Willi Mernyi and Ingrid Reischl were appointed by the ÖGB federal executive committee to succeed Achitz as senior secretaries of the ÖGB. On 1 July 2019 he was Federal President of barking Alexander Van as ombudsman sworn in .

In the Ombudsman's Office he is responsible for social issues, care and health, at the federal level for the areas of health, pension and accident insurance as well as labor market administration, youth, women and family, and at the state level for the areas of minimum income, basic care and health administration.
