Bernhard Caesar Einstein (* 10. July 1930 in Dortmund , † thirtieth September 2008 in Bern ) was a Swiss - American engineer for optoelectronics . He was a grandson of Albert Einstein and Mileva Einstein .

life and work

Einstein lived in Switzerland until he was eight. Following the advice of his grandfather Albert Einstein, his family emigrated to Greenville, South Carolina . His father, Hans Albert Einstein , became a professor at the California Institute of Technology and so he spent his youth in Pasadena . He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and joined the US Army in 1954. He completed basic training at Fort Ord near Monterey County , California. He was then stationed in southern Germany, where he met his first wife, a daughter of Fritzmartin Ascher , Doris Aude Ascher, and married in 1954. They had five children: Thomas Martin Einstein, Paul Michael Einstein, Eduard Albert Einstein, Mira Einstein-Yehieli and Charles Quincy Ascher. After his discharge from the army, he studied physics at the ETH Zurich , where he received his diploma. He returned to the United States and worked as an engineer for Texas Instruments in Dallas , Texas. He then worked at Litton Industries in the San Francisco Bay Area in the electron tube technology department, developing light amplification devices for night vision. While at Litton Industries, he applied for four US patents relating to light amplification technology. In 1974 he returned to Switzerland and worked in laser technology at the research laboratory of the Swiss Army in Thun , where he received another US patent.
