Bernhard III. (Baden-Baden)
Margrave Bernhard III. von Baden (* October 7, 1474 , † June 29, 1536 ) inherited parts of the margraviate of Baden from his father in 1515 together with his two brothers Ernst I and Philip . He ruled his part from 1515 to 1536.
After his brother Philip died in 1533 and his part fell back to him and his brother Ernst I, the two lines of government emerged
- "Bernhardinische Linie" (Catholic) Baden-Baden and
- "Ernestine Line" (Protestant) Baden-Durlach.
Only after the Baden-Baden line died out was the margraviate of Baden reunited in 1771 under Margrave Karl Friedrich .
Bernhard was educated at the court of Emperor Maximilian and went to Spain with his friend Philipp , Maximilian's son. Philip was made King of Spain in 1504 . Margrave Bernhard tended to Protestantism in later years and introduced the Reformation in the upper margraviate .
Marriage and offspring
Bernhard III. married in 1535 two years before his death Franziska von Luxemburg , Countess of Brienne and Luxemburg († June 17, 1566), the daughter of Count Charles I de Luxembourg-Ligny . The marriage resulted in two sons, with the second child, Christoph, not born until after the death of the margrave.
- Philibert (born January 22, 1536 - † October 3, 1569)
- Christoph (February 26, 1537 - August 2, 1575)
However, Bernhard still had numerous illegitimate children, six of whom are known to have sons (Bernhard, Philipp, Johann, Georg, Caspar and Melchior). Emperor Charles V declared Georg, Caspar and Melchior to be legitimate princes in 1532, and later Bernhard and Philipp as well. Although these sons were not entitled to inheritance, they received maintenance payments even after their father's death.
