Bernhard Lüthi

Bernhard Lüthi (born August 21, 1938 in Bern ) is a Swiss painter and curator .

life and work

Bernhard Lüthi trained as a photo retoucher in Berne, after which he worked as a designer in an advertising agency in Basel from 1961 to 1964 and at the same time began to produce his own artistic work. He has lived and worked in Düsseldorf since 1968 . He stayed several times for longer periods in Australia (1974-75, 1977-78 and 1985), where he dealt with the art and culture of the Aborigines . Lüthi spent 1976 in New York.

Bernhard Lüthi had teaching positions from 1979 to 1980 at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf and from 1989 to 1990 at the Art Academy in Münster .

In the 1980s Bernhard Lüthi was a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney and from 1990 to 1994 he curated the exhibition "Aratjara - Art of the First Australians", which was shown in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf, London and Louisiana. In 1989 he was in charge of the Australian contribution to the Magiciens de la terre exhibition at the Center Georges Pompidou, Paris . From 1999 to 2001 he was co-curator of the exhibition "Altars of the World" in the Museum Kunstpalast . In 2006 he initiated a retrospective on the work of the Australian artist John Mawurndjul in the Museum Tinguely in Basel and in the Sprengel Museum Hannover .
