Bernhard Schmid (organist, 1535)

Bernhard Schmid , in literature also Bernhard Schmid the Elder or Latinized Bernhard Fabricius , (* 1535 in Strasbourg ; † 1592 there ) was a German composer and organist of the Renaissance.

biography

Schmid worked at the St. Thomas Church in Strasbourg in 1560 and as organist at the Strasbourg Cathedral from 1564 to 1592 . His successor, initially at the Thomaskirche and from 1592 as cathedral organist, was his son Bernhard Schmid the Younger .

In 1577 Schmid published the work Zwey Bücher, a new artificial tablature on organs and instruments  , in his home town of Strasbourg . The first volume is dedicated to liturgical compositions. The second volume contains song arrangements for organ or clavichord as well as dance pieces.
