Bernhard von Münster (* 1500 ; † May 1, 1557 in Münster ) was a cathedral provost in Münster.

Life

Origin and family

Bernhard von Münster came from the highly free Westphalian noble family von Münster as the son of the married couple Johann von Münster zu Meinhövel and Berta Hilla von Diepenbrock . Anna Tartenmeckers (also Teuteberg, Totenmakers) was his concubine . He had seven children with her, which was tolerated during the Reformation. His daughter Catharina married the bishop's secretary Johann Droste († 1596). This came from an illegitimate association of the Stiftsbursar of St. Ludgeri (Münster) , Johann Droste zu Handorf, a son of the mayor of Münster Everwin II von Droste zu Handorf . His brother was the episcopal official and humanist writer Everwin von Droste zu Hülshoff .

Act

Bernhard was canon in 1522 and was elected Provost of Wilhelm Ketteler's successor on November 13, 1553 and confirmed by the bishop on January 1, 1554. He was in command of the House of Lüdinghausen and owned the Scholving obedience and the Stadtlohn archdeaconate . After the death of his childless nephew Heinrich von Münster, he erected the Laurentius Altar in 1555 in the Münster cathedral , in front of which he was buried on May 1st, 1557. Here is his epitaph. Johann Schencking, who was educated and educated at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome, was appointed by the Pope as his successor . However, the cathedral chapter refused to install office because of its origin. This was the beginning of the Munster hereditary dispute that lasted until 1708 .
