Bernward Rothe

Bernward Rothe (* December 24, 1958 in Bonn ; † March 22, 2018 in Halle ) was a German lawyer and politician of the SPD , who was a member of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt from 1998 to 2016 and a member of the city council of Halle from 2014 to 2017 (Saale) was. He was the main initiator of the referendum to merge the federal states of Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia into " Central Germany ".

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1977, Rothe did his military service and became a non-commissioned officer in the reserve. From 1988 he was a trainee lawyer at the Cologne Higher Regional Court before becoming a member of the government council in 1991 for employment in the Halle district government . In 1996 Rothe became a senior councilor in the Merseburg Police Department . As a proponent of reducing the number of civil servants, Rothe was dismissed from civil servant status in 2010 at his own request and had been a lawyer since 2011.

Political party

In 1985 he joined the SPD. In 1994 he became chairman of the SPD local association Halle- Süd. From 2002 until the merger of the district associations in 2006, Rothe was chairman of the SPD district association Aschersleben-Staßfurt . From 2009 until the move to Halle (Saale) in 2013 he was chairman of the SPD local association Aschersleben and returned in 2016 as an assessor to the board of the SPD local association Halle-Süd.

He represented the constituency of Aschersleben in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt and was a member a. a. in the Committee on Home Affairs, the Committee on Petitions and the Committee on Legal Affairs, Constitution and Equality.

Restructuring of the federal territory

Rothe was committed to a reorganization of the federal territory. Specifically, he and Roland Mey from Leipzig wanted to merge the federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The motion for a referendum to bring about a uniform nationality for this area was rejected on September 30, 2015 by the Federal Ministry of the Interior as "inadmissible and unfounded". The reorganization area designated in the applications is not a contiguous, delimited settlement and economic area within the meaning of Article 29 (4) of the Basic Law. On November 2, 2015, Rothe lodged a complaint with the Federal Constitutional Court against this decision as the initiative's shop steward. The constitutional complaint was rejected.
