Franz Berthold Welte (born September 24, 1843 in Vöhrenbach in the Black Forest, † January 29, 1918 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German manufacturer and businessman.

Life

He was the second child of the famous music box maker Michael Welte and his wife Maria Adelheidis Ganter (1819–1857). Raised in Vöhrenbach, he finished in 1866 his business education at "Mathiss & Leipheimer, Elle goods -Handlung and purveyor in Karlsruhe". In 1865 he became a partner in his father's company, M. Welte & Sons . In 1867 he represented the company at the World Exhibition in Paris . From 1870–1872 he managed the move of the von Vöhrenbach company to a new building in Freiburg. In 1873 he married Maria Emilie Mayer (* 1852 in Villingen , † 1930 in Freiburg im Breisgau) in Freiburg). The couple had three children: Maria Adelheid Frieda Welte (* 1874 Freiburg - † 1930 Freiburg), Edwin Emil Welte (* 1876 Freiburg - † 1958 Freiburg), Emil Welte (* 1879 Freiburg - † 1936 Freiburg). In 1880, after the death of their father, the business was taken over by the brothers Emil, Michael jr. and Berthold.

In 1900 Michael Welte jr. back from the management, Berthold's son Edwin Welte and son-in-law Karl Bockisch joined the company as partners. 1905 saw the launch of the 1904 patented Welte-Mignon - reproduction pianos , a development of Edwin Welte and Karl Bockisch.

In 1875 he was accepted into the Freiburg Freemasons' lodge Zur noble Aussicht , where he was master of the chair from 1907 to 1909 .

Bertold Welte died in January 1918 at the age of 84. Together with his working in the United States since 1865 brother Emil he had the factory OPERATION of M. Welte & Sons made the world-famous company.
