Bertrand Herz (born April 24, 1930 in Paris ; died May 20, 2021 there ) was a French engineer and university professor of Jewish descent who had to do forced labor as a teenager in the Buchenwald concentration camp . From 2001 he was General Secretary of the Association Française Buchenwald Dora et Commands and President of the International Committee Buchenwald-Dora and Commands .

After the family fled to the non-occupied part of France in 1942 , Bertrand Herz and several relatives were arrested by the Gestapo in July 1944 , interned in Toulouse and then deported with the father to the Buchenwald concentration camp , while the mother and sister were transferred to the Ravensbrück concentration camp . He was given prisoner number 69592 and was housed in block 61 of the small camp . Together with his father, he had to do forced labor at the Junkers aircraft factory in the Niederorschel subcamp, as a result of which his father died in January 1945. After his return to Buchenwald, Herz experienced the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp by the 3rd US Army there on April 11, 1945 .

A few weeks after the liberation he returned to France, where his sister had since returned, while his mother had died in Ravensbrück concentration camp in December 1944.

Bertrand Herz completed his studies at the École polytechnique , where he obtained his patent as a graduate engineer in 1953 .

He then entered the French Navy , in which he was held for several years as commander of the reserve . During this time, in 1958, he expanded his knowledge of computer science and specialized in organizational, advisory and managerial activities in the field of computer science. He also worked for an insurance company and was an employee of a large corporation .

Due to his qualifications, he was appointed professor at the Technological Institute of the University of Paris V in 1985 , where he taught until 1994. In the following years he saw his task even more in the representation of the French former beech forest prisoners and took on high management positions.

Bertrand Herz died on May 20, 2021 at the age of 91 in Paris.
