Bertrand Koppensteiner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bertrand Koppensteiner OCist (born November 12, 1876 in Schweiggers , Lower Austria as Johann Koppensteiner ; † June 23, 1961 ) was an Austrian clergyman and the 64th abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Zwettl .

Life

Bertrand Koppensteiner was born on November 12, 1876 as the son of the farmer Johann Koppensteiner and his wife Johanna (née Lechner) in the Lower Austrian community of Schweiggers and was subsequently baptized in the name of Johann . After completing school he joined the Zwettl Abbey in 1896 and, after being ordained a priest, was a cooperative abbey in Zwettl. In 1903 he was sent to Schweiggers as a cooperator . From 1909 he worked as a parish administrator in Siebenlinden (today a district of Schweiggers). He then acted as pastor and dean in Schweiggers from 1917 to 1935 . At the beginning of February 1917, the Österreichische Land-Zeitung reported on his return to Schweiggers, where he was again active as a parish administrator. Also in 1917 Koppensteiner received a decree of recognition from István Burián , the head of the joint finance ministry (read: finance minister), “for outstanding services in the interest of promoting the success of the war bonds” .

Under the chairmanship of Vicar General Gregor Pöck , Koppensteiner was elected 64th abbot of Zwettl on November 6, 1935, and was appointed in the collegiate church the following day by Michael Memelauer , the diocesan bishop of St. Pölten . He succeeded Leopold Schmidt , who died on June 24, 1935 at the age of 50 . His good relationship with the NS district leader Hermann Reisinger helped prevent the abolition of the monastery during the National Socialist era . Nevertheless, the pen was not entirely spared during the Second World War and the Nazi era. During Koppensteiner's tenure, the monastery had to cede more than 700 hectares of forest and arable land, including the Dürnhof, to the Döllersheim military training area (now Allentsteig military training area ), which was built in 1938 . On August 9, 1945, Koppensteiner was chairman of the election of Karl Braunstorfer as 64th abbot of Heiligenkreuz Abbey .

Koppensteiner died on June 23, 1961 at the age of 84; his successor as Abbot of Zwettl was Ferdinand Gießauf .
