Vocational school teachers are teachers who teach basic vocational training , higher vocational training and vocational training . They must all have a technical , pedagogical and methodological and didactic training . According to Swiss law, teachers from vocational schools (this is the official term for schools that are active in the context of basic vocational training) are responsible for vocational training together with the vocational trainers. If people have previously taught part-time at a vocational school and would like to develop this activity into a full-time position, they have to complete an additional course.

Vocational school teacher in a general education and specialist field

They receive their basic vocational education either at the Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (SFIVET) (formerly the Swiss Institute for Vocational Education SIPB), at the Zurich University of Education (PH Zurich) or at the St. Gallen University of Education (PHSG). At the PHZ Lucerne , in cooperation with the aeB Switzerland, the course is offered in the professional direction.

Admission requirements and teaching qualification: As a rule, the following applies:

  • Completion of higher vocational training (professional examination, higher technical examination, higher technical school) or a university (technical college, university, ETH) in the corresponding subject area or equivalent professional qualification
  • At least 6 months of operational experience (depending on the subject, up to 2 years of professional experience)

Those responsible for education have a teaching qualification for the upper secondary level after each training path , including:

As a rule, you will receive your training at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology , supplemented by vocational training at one of the two institutions mentioned above.

Teachers from commercial vocational schools

Commercial teachers are trained at universities, at the Zurich University of Education (PH Zurich) or at the Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (EHB).

There is no special course for the technical training of the IKA teacher (IKA stands for Information-Communication-Administration); they receive their professional pedagogical training together with the specialist teachers at the PH Zurich, the EHB and the PHZ / aeB. However, they also attend IKA-specific specialist didactics events.
