The Bessang Pass Natural Monument is located on the island of Luzon , Philippines . It was established in 2000 on an area of 5.11 km² in the province of Ilocos Sur in the municipality of Cervantes . The nature reserve is surrounded by a buffer zone of 8.01 km². It was named after the Bessang Pass, where a battle for the pass between the Japanese Imperial Army and the US armed forces took place on June 14, 1945 during World War II . A National Shrine was built to commemorate this battle.
The pass is approximately 140 kilometers south of Vigan City and 371 kilometers north of Manila . The nature reserve Bessang Pass Natural Monument is located in the westernmost mountain range of the Cordillera Central . The Tirad Pass National Park connects to the north of the nature reserve . The national memorial was built directly on the Bessang Pass, at an altitude of 1390 meters.
