Bessemer is a city in Gogebic County in the US state of Michigan , United States , with 1,905 inhabitants (2010). The city is also the county seat of Gogebic County and lies in an area that is very snowy due to the influence of Lake Superior .

The city is surrounded by the Bessem township , but is politically independent from it. It is located on US Highway 2 between Ironwood in the west and Wakefield further east. Two rail lines run through the city, the Chicago and North Western Railway and a stretch of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway , which ends a few kilometers east of the city.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of ​​14.2 km², with no significant body of water. The Kallander Creek rises in the eastern part of the city and flows a few hundred meters westwards before it turns north and heads towards the Black River .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Bessemer inhabited 2148 people. The population density was 151.6 people per km ². There were 1179 housing units at an average of 83.2 per km ². Bessemer's population was 96.88% White , 0.14% Black or African American , 1.21% Native American , 0.42% Asian , 0.05% Pacific Islander , 0.42% said other races belong to and 0.88% named two or more races. 0.70% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Bessemer distributed to 976 households out of which 25.6% were living in children under 18 years. 46.1% of households were married, 9.8% had a female head of the household without a husband and 41.6% were not families. 38.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 21.3% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
