Better for America was created in June 2016 against the background of dissatisfaction with the looming candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton with the aim of running a candidate for the US presidency who was independent of the two major parties. Since conservative forces in particular were at work here, the organization was assigned to the so-called “Never Trump” movement.

The aim was initially in states with an electoral law that allows inclusion on the ballot papers without mentioning the actual name - Articles 1 and 2 of the United States Constitution stipulate the regulations for the election of the US President, in particular in Article 1 stipulates that each state has its own electoral laws - getting on the ballot papers. A corresponding petition for recognition as a party in New Mexico initially failed due to the quorum . In Arkansas, however, a corresponding petition for recognition as a party for the presidential election in early August was successful.

On August 8, 2016, Republican Evan McMullin announced that he would run in the November 8, 2016 presidential election with the support of Better for America. However, due to the late candidacy, he missed the registration dates in various other states . After an appeal by Better for America, which went to court, the organization was also recognized as a party in New Mexico in September and McMullin was approved in the state.

As a candidate for Better for America, McMullin is in the running in Arkansas and New Mexico, and with the support of other organizations, he was ultimately included on the ballot in eleven states. In addition, he can use so-called write-ins , i.e. H. be elected via a handwritten addition by the voter on the ballot papers, in accordance with the respective electoral law in other countries. In addition, McMullin's campaign announced that it would take action against these restrictions in law in states where this is not currently provided for in the electoral law.

On October 6, McMullin selected 35-year-old businesswoman and media strategist Mindy Finn as running mate for the presidential election. Due to the electoral law of some states, which only allow candidacy with the naming of a vice-presidential candidate, Nathan Johnson , a supporter of McMullin , is sometimes used as a placeholder on the ballot, but according to his own statement, this will be waived in the event of an election victory.
