Beyləqan (also Beylagan ) is a city in Azerbaijan and the administrative seat of the Beyləqan district . In 2014 the city had around 15,900 inhabitants.

history

The city of Palakatan , founded by the Sassanid ruler Qobad and was the capital of the state of Albania in the 5th century, was located here. After the Islamic conquest, it became a flourishing trading town on the road from Ardabil to Bərdə under the name of Beyləqan . The name Beyləqan is probably derived from the Kurdish tribe of the Belikân who lived in the nearby mountains.

The city was destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century. The ruins of historic Beyləqan are near the present city.

During the Soviet period, sovkhos No. 5 was established there. On September 10, 1932, its housing estate with the full name of Possjolok Sovkhosa № 5 Milskoi gruppy sovkhozov ("Sochos No. 5 settlement of the Milsk sovkhoz group") received the status of an urban-type settlement , and on January 24, 1939 the name Zhdanovsk ( Russian Ждановск ; Azerbaijani Jdanov ) after the politician Andrei Zhdanov (1896–1948). On August 2, 1966, the city rights were awarded. Since 1989 the city has borne the name of its historical predecessor, adapted to the modern Azerbaijani.
