Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited ( BHEL ) is a state-owned company in India based in New Delhi and was founded in 1964. The company is a manufacturer of gas and steam turbines , steam boilers and other mechanical and electrical components for power plant and energy technology.

The company, which is majority-owned by the public sector , has been allowed to carry the Maharatna status since 2010, as one of only seven companies at present.

BHEL has locations in Bhopal , Haridwar , Hyderabad , Tiruchirappalli and Ranipet , among others .

The company employs around 47,500 people (as of 2014).
