Ranipet ( Tamil : இராணிப்பேட்டை Irāṇippēṭṭai [ (ɨ) ˈɾaːɳipːeːʈːɛi ], also Ranipettai ) is a city in the Vellore district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 51,000 (2011 census).

Ranipet is located in northern Tamil Nadu around 120 kilometers west of Chennai (Madras) on the banks of the Palar River, which has periodic waters . The cities of Walajapet and Arcot are in the immediate vicinity . The district capital Vellore is 25 kilometers to the west. Located on the national highway NH 4 from Chennai to Bangalore , Walajapet has good transport links. Six kilometers north of Ranipet is Walajah Road Station on the Chennai-Bangalore railway line. The station is served by long-distance trains and the western line of the Chennaier suburban railway.

Many small industrial companies in the chemical, leather and toolmaking industries are located in Ranippettai. The largest state-owned company is the Boiler Auxiliaries Plant (BAP) of BHEL ( Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited). The place is considered a negative example of groundwater pollution with heavy metals. The American Blacksmith Institute published a list of the most polluted cities and areas in October 2006 , which also includes Ranipettai. It names tanneries and their waste (including chromium compounds and azo dyes ) as the main cause.

76 percent of Ranipet's residents are Hindus , 15 percent Muslim and 8 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 91 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 6 percent speak Urdu and 3 percent Telugu .
