Walajapet ( Tamil : வாலாஜாபேட்டை Vālājāpēṭṭai [ ˈʋaːlaːdʒaːˌpeːʈːɛi̯ ]; also Walajapettai ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . Walajapet is the capital of the Taluk Wallajah in the Vellore district . The population is around 32,000 (2011 census).

Walajapet is located in northern Tamil Nadu around 110 kilometers west of Chennai (Madras) on the banks of the Palar River, which has periodic waters . The cities of Ranipet and Arcot are in the immediate vicinity of Walajapet . The district capital Vellore is 30 kilometers to the west. Located on the national highway NH 4 from Chennai to Bangalore , Walajapet has good transport links. Walajah Road Station is located 4.5 kilometers from the city center on the Chennai-Bangalore Railway Line.

Walajapet is named after the nawab of Arcot Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah (r. 1752–1795). Walajah or Wallajah is a Persian honorary title of Muhammad Ali Khan, while pettai or pet is a common part of Tamil city names.

86 percent of Walajapet's residents are Hindus , 12 percent are Muslims and 1 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 66 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 13 percent speak Urdu , 10 percent Saurashtri and 9 percent Telugu .
