life and work

Bhupen Khakhar studied economics and political science at the University of Mumbai . He completed his studies with a bachelor's degree . He worked full-time as an accountant at Bharat Parikh & Associates in Vadodara.

He took courses as an art critic at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and obtained his master's degree . As an artist, Bhupen Khakhar was self-taught . Collages from the print media, stuck on mirrors, combined with graffiti and gestural painting, marked the beginning of his career and made him one of the first Indian Pop Art artists. In the early 1970s, Khakhar began oil painting and chose motifs that were autobiographically motivated. He made the everyday life of Indians, for example tailors, hairdressers and watchmakers, as well as his assistant for accounting, his subject. David Hockney was one of his artistic sources of inspiration. Kakhar chose topics from his respective surroundings and treats vulnerability, dreams and his homosexual identity openly and with humor.

Kakhar was a central figure in the Baroda School, a loose grouping of figurative painters that also includes Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh and Sudhir Patwardhan .

At numerous exhibitions in India and internationally, such as the IX. The São Paulo Biennial and documenta IX in Kassel featured works by Bhupen Kakhar. The London Tate Modern organized a retrospective for him from June 1 to November 6, 2016, which was subsequently shown in the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle in Berlin (November 18, 2016 to March 5, 2017).
