Bianca Tschaikner (born 1985 in Bregenz ) is an Austrian illustrator and artist .

Life

After studying at the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences , which she completed with the illustration of a cookbook , she worked for various Austrian and international journals and magazines, including the Falter , Eltern , the chef magazine and the feminist magazine an.schlag . Tschaikner has exhibited her works in Austria, Germany, Spain, Morocco and the USA since 2006. From 2012 she studied printmaking at the International School of Graphic Arts II Bisonte in Florence.

She has u. a. lived in Chile, the USA and Iran, in India, Italy, Portugal and Spain ( Tangier ), z. Sometimes for several years. The ornamentation in the oriental and Arab-Muslim cultural area had particularly influenced her on her artistic path: "A Persian mosque inspires me more than an Art Nouveau house."

At the same time, experiences of sexist discrimination in these countries have made them aware of forms of sexual violence, from verbal lewdness to exhibitionistic acts, of degradation and disrespect towards women in general.

Tschaikner's work includes drawings , etchings , lithographs and woodcuts . She illustrates journals, magazines, books, postcards and specialist articles. In 2016 she wrote with SAVARI. An illustrated journey through Iran & India for the first time a book in which she illustrates her own texts in the style of a graphic novel and shapes her travel experiences in a semi-autobiographical manner.

controversy

The Viennese left-liberal city magazine Der Falter published an issue in January 2016 with the focus on the mass misogynist violence in connection with the sexual assaults on New Year's Eve 2015/16, with Bianca Tschaikner commissioned with the graphic design on the cover. The editorial team backed Tschaikner's illustration with the Simone de Beauvoir quote “Nobody is more aggressive or condescending towards women than a man who is not entirely sure of his masculinity”. The illustration was controversially discussed and ultimately reported by a reader to the Austrian press council , as it identified racist elements. As a result of an internally controversial decision by Senate 1 of the Press Council, Falter received a reprimand from the Press Council; The attacks parted with Bianca Tschaikner. These sanctions were again critically discussed.
