Bibliotheca Dracula

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bibliotheca Dracula was a series of books published by Hanser Verlag between 1969 and 1974 . It comprised 14 volumes and was supervised by the editors Michael Krüger and Dieter Sturm. Similar to the library of the House of Usher , it contributed to popularizing fantastic literature in the German-speaking world.

The individual volumes were published in a bibliophile design by Uwe Bremer with eye-catching dust jackets, a picture of a vampire on the book cover and other grotesquely eerie images.

Content and details

Except for the French Gaston Leroux , whose novel Phantom of the Opera was represented, the series mainly presented English-speaking writers, some of whom were presented for the first time in German or in new translations. These include B. Charles Robert Maturin's influential horror novel Melmoth the Wanderer , broadcast by Friedrich Polakovics .

Other authors were Charles Brockden Brown ( Wieland or the Metamorphosis ), Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu ( Uncle Silas ), Matthew Gregory Lewis ( The Monk ), Ann Radcliffe ( The Italian ), Robert Louis Stevenson ( The Wrong Box , supplemented by Lloyd Osbourne ) , Mary Shelley ( Frankenstein ) and Bram Stoker , who was the only one represented with two works with his novel Dracula as the eponym of the series and with the volume of short stories In the House of Count Dracula .

In addition to this selection of four published anthologies to different motives of fantasy: From where vampires and humans suckers , black masses , artificial people (see also Homunculus ) and From werewolves and other animal people .

The vampire anthology, which for Rein A. Zondergeld is the most important of the four collections, is divided into poems , documents and a historical and literary report , the first by Klaus Völker , the second by Dieter Sturm. At the end of the volume, a filmography dating back to 1967 lists the most important vampire films. The poems begin with the bride of Amphipolis by Phlegon von Tralleis , a text that Goethe processed in his ballad The Bride of Corinth , which was also selected , continue with prose by Nikolai Gogol and Alexei Konstantinowitsch Tolstoy and end with poetry by Stefan George and Gertrud Kolmar and Ingeborg Bachmann . The second part with selected documents ranges from the table speeches by Martin Luther and Martin Behm to reports by Count zum Stein ( dialogue about the smacking of the dead ) to texts by Voltaire .
