The library of the nation (Turkish Cumhurbaşkanlığı Millet Kütüphanesi ) is the largest library in Turkey. According to official information, the inventory comprises two million printed books in 134 different languages. The library is attached to the office of the President of the Republic of Turkey and, as part of the Külliye, belongs to the presidential palace . The library is located in the Yenimahalle district of the Turkish capital Ankara in the Beştepe district between Söğütözü Caddesi, Beştepe Caddesi and Çiftlik Caddesi.

history

In 2016, the construction of the library was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The library was opened by the President on February 20, 2020 in the presence of more than 2000 guests.

The Nation's Library has been the largest library in the country since the Republic of Turkey was founded. The library has a copy of the first Turkish dictionary Dîvânul-Lugâti't-Türk by Mahmūd al-Kāschgharī .

The library has an area of ​​125,000 m² and can accommodate 5,500 readers. The architecture of the library has been designed with white and pink marble and is decorated with Ottoman and Seljuk traditional and contemporary motifs.

Departments, halls and specialist libraries

Cihannümâ Hall

The Cihannümâ Hall got its name from the unfinished cosmography of the Turkish polymath Katib Çelebi and has a collection of around 200,000 media. It offers space for 224 people on an area of ​​3469 m². Books from over 100 countries in 134 different languages ​​are available here, as well as books written on behalf of the Presidents of the Republic of Turkey.

Rare Works Library

The library for rare works has an area of ​​1699 m² and offers space for 226 visitors on two floors. It has eight workgroup rooms. The library contains approximately 50,000 rare works and a collection of digitized forms of these works. The library includes manuscripts, printed works in Ottoman Turkish, works with painting and engraving, limited works, and works published in Western languages ​​prior to 1900.

Research library

The research library has an area of ​​3862 m² and can accommodate 630 visitors. The library has a collection of around 20,000 books and has 2 floors and 20 workgroup rooms. This department contains scientific books, research reports and documents that serve as the basis for academic studies.

Nasreddin Hodscha children's library

The Nasreddin Hodscha children's library has space for 197 people on an area of ​​1061 m². The children's library with a collection of 25,000 media is aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 10. The library also hosts listening activities and traditional Turkish art work. In addition, the children's library has a cinema room where fairy tales are on the program.

Youth library

The youth library for young people between the ages of 10 and 15 has 12,000 media and space for 74 people on an area of ​​1699 m². The individual learning rooms can be used after prior reservation. Young people can also read individually in the special rooms of the library or work in three rooms that are reserved for group work.

Audio and video library

The audio and video library has a collection of around 10,000 audiovisual materials and a capacity of 209 seats on an area of ​​1,800 m². The library has two floors and comprises four digital rooms and twelve individual display / listening booths.

Magazine hall

The magazine magazine with a collection of 1550 current magazines and newspapers offers space for 193 people on an area of ​​1123 m². The collection includes magazines in various directions and languages ​​such as literature, art, history, law, business, sports, and healthy living.

Reading room

The entire reading room with an area of ​​9610 m² has a collection of approx. 300,000 media and offers space for 1,328 people. The reading rooms have 32 group work rooms and 8 relaxation areas.

Reference library

The presence inventory in the reading room comprises around 10,000 media on an area of ​​120 m². In this area you will find dictionaries, encyclopedias, yearbooks and almanacs .

More services

  • 7,000 magazines from 120 countries and daily newspapers with same-day access. 90-day archives of these publications with full-page original prints can be viewed on the screens in the reading room.
  • In addition to electronic library services, readers have 24/7 access to resources through mobile applications.
  • There is a large restaurant on the 6th floor of the library.
