Bicane is a white wine whose origin is still unknown. The Italian Alberto Piròvano used the variety to breed the popular table grapes Italia and Perlona , but also the lesser-known varieties Ciclopica and Marengo .

Bicane is hardly grown any more. Smaller plantings are known in Romania, Australia and Tunisia.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is only hairy like a cobweb. The light green young leaves are hairless and spotted copper-colored ( anthocyanin spots ).
  • The leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stalk bay is closed and the leaf ends overlap. The leaf margin is serrated to a point. The teeth are closely set compared to other grape varieties.
  • The cone-shaped grape is very large, shouldered and loose berries. The elongated berries are large. They are golden yellow in color when fully ripe. The berry pod is thick-walled, the pulp tastes pleasant.

The Bicane grape variety ripens approx. 20-25 days after the Gutedel grape variety and thus belongs to the grape varieties of the late second ripening period (see the chapter in the article grape variety). This makes it one of the mid-late ripening varieties. Bicane is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It only has female flowers and is therefore not self-fruiting. In viticulture, there is the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yields.

Due to the female flowers, the variety is prone to heavy trickling . Therefore the grapes are very loose.
