Alberto Piròvano

Alberto Piròvano (born March 7, 1884 in Vaprio d'Adda , † February 23, 1973 in Rome ) was an Italian ampelographer and professor at the Istituto di Frutticoltura ed Elettrogenetica di Roma in Rome.

Pirovano as a vine grower

Most of the grape varieties bred by Pirovano and his father Luigi were not intended for commercial use, but became the basis for other breeds such as Schönburger , whose cross between Spätburgunder × Pirovano 1 was made in 1939 . The proportion of cultivations for table grapes is significantly higher than the cultivation for wine .

From 1912 he irradiated the plants to be grown with X-rays and UV rays , with low-frequency rays and permanently exposed the plants to magnetic fields in order to bring about changes in the cell material and thus the mutation . He published the first results in Milan in 1922 under the title "La Mutazione Elettrica delle Specie Botaniche e la Disciplina dell'Ibridazione" "Genetic changes in plants due to electrical radiation" (rough translation). During his life there were around 50 dossiers that he published on the subject.
