List of grape varieties

Primus is a white wine variety . The new breed was created in 1901 from a cross between the Madeleine Royale × Ferdinand de Lesseps varieties and is occasionally also called Pirovano 7. The breeder was Alberto Piròvano , who developed numerous grape varieties at the Istituto di Frutticoltura ed Elettrogenetica di Roma in Rome . Primus was officially added to the list of approved table grape varieties . The variety recommended in Basilicata and approved in Liguria, Lombardy, Tuscany, Campania and Puglia is rarely grown. The grapes are offered in the markets of Rome and Naples.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy with white wool and has a crimson tinge. The yellow-green young leaves are lightly hairy.
  • The leaves (see also the leaf shape article ) are five-lobed and have a medium-deep curve. The stalk bay is often closed like a lyre and the leaf ends overlap. The leaf margin is serrated to a point. The teeth are closely set compared to other grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called the leaf blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical grape is small and loose berries. The rounded berries are medium to large in size. When fully ripe they are whitish-yellow in color. The berry pod is thick-walled, the pulp has a very subtle nutmeg aroma (Pierre Galet describes it more as a Fox tone ).

The Primus grape variety ripens approx. 5–10 days after the Gutedel grape variety and thus belongs to the grape varieties of the early first ripening period (see the chapter in the article grape variety). It is one of the early maturing varieties. Due to the influence of the Ferdinand de Lesseps variety, Primus belongs to the hybrid vine family ( Vitis vinifera + Vitis labrusca ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is self-fruiting. In viticulture , therefore, there is no economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield.
