The Euskal Bizikleta was a very mountainous race, which is reflected in the list of winners. With the introduction of the UCI Europe Tour in 2005, the race belonged to this racing series and was classified in the highest category 2nd HC.

The race has been held under this name since 1991 and had various previous events. The stage race Arrateko Igoera - Eibarko Bizikleta (Spanish: Subida a Arrate - Bicicleta Eibarresa ) was held under the same mode from 1987 to 1990 . As indicated by the compound name, this race was the result of the fusion of the stage race Eibarko Bizikleta and the one-day race Arrateko Igoera . The Arrateko Igoera was held with occasional interruptions from 1941 to 1986, so that this race went seamlessly into the successor race. In contrast, the last Eibarko Bizikleta took place in 1968. The break, which lasted almost 20 years, was partly filled by merging this tour with the Basque Country tour from 1969 to 1973 for five years . After increasing financial problems, the race was canceled in 2009 and merged with the Tour of the Basque Country.
