Big Walter Price

Big Walter Price (* as Walter Travis Price August 2, 1914 in Gonzales , Texas ; † March 8, 2012 in Houston , Texas) was an American musician ( piano , vocals ) and songwriter of the Texas blues .

Walter Price grew up with his aunt, left home at the age of eleven and moved to San Antonio , where he got by in various jobs before coming into contact with the music scene in the 1940s. He started writing songs and learned to play the piano. His first recordings were made in the 1950s; For Bob Tanner's TNT label in San Antonio, he recorded three singles that were released in 1955. The first record was Calling Margie , which was released under the band name Big Walter and his Thunderbirds , which earned him the suffix The Thunderbird . At the end of 1955 he moved to Houston and took part in recordings of Clarence Gatemouth Brown for the Peacock label , which appeared in 1956/57 and were successful. For the label he took a. a. singles Shirley Jean and Pack Fair And Square / Hello Maria , accompanied by members of the Little Richard band, The Upsetters (Grady Gaines, Clifford Burks, Nat Douglas). The latter song was covered by the J. Geils Band and Nine Below Zero in the 1970s .

1958 Price took two singles for the label gold ribbon in Lake Charles ( Louisiana on), San Antonio / Crazy Dream and Oh Ramona . In the 1960s he recorded records for various small labels, but they were unsuccessful. During this time Price was working in a striptease club in Houston. He continued to perform as a musician, ran a record store and the music publisher Dinosaur, he also worked as a disc jockey for the local station KCOH and appeared in films such as The Black Zombies of Sugar Hill (1974). In the 1980s, previously unreleased recordings by Big Walter Price appeared on LP.
