The Bildungshaus St. Bernhard (former Archbishop's Knaben- und Gymniasal Convict Rastatt ) is a Roman Catholic educational institution of the Archdiocese of Freiburg in Rastatt in the Rastatt district in Baden-Württemberg, built in 1897 . The Bildungshaus is under the patronage of the Blessed Margrave Bernhard von Baden . His picture is on the front of the house and another statue is in front of the house. It is the largest educational center in the Archdiocese of Freiburg and is available for educational measures, retreats, days of reflection, seminars, conferences and free time.

history

On July 10, 1896, the Archdiocese of Freiburg turned to the municipal council of the city of Rastatt with the following request:

“We intend to build an Archbishop's and Gymnasium Convict in a town in the Badisches Mittelland in which there is a grammar school, or to construct or acquire the necessary building for such a school. Our first focus is on Rastatt, because we consider the existing conditions there to be right and because we are convinced that the honorable town council and the citizens will show a benevolent interest in our plans and facilitate their implementation. "

- Archb. Ordinariate Freiburg im Breisgau.

Just four days later, the city of Rastatt responded with an expression of thanks. In January 1897 the contract for the construction of the house was signed and construction work started in the summer. On September 12, 1898, the opening of the Archbishop's seminary for boys was celebrated with 119 students. The maximum number was reached in the 1905/06 school year with 218 students.

In 1933 the house was modernized by installing modern sanitary facilities. From 1933, the number of pupils fell to 93 due to a sharp turning point. During the Second World War the building served as a hospital.

It was not until the 1960s that pupils from a modern-language or scientific train could live in the Konvikt . Before that, the study home was mainly used to raise the next generation of priests and the young people attended the classical language class at the Ludwig-Wilhelm-Gymnasium.

An extension of the St. Bernhard student home followed in 1968. Even after it was renamed, it was called “Konvikt” in Rastatt. In 1981 the boarding school was closed at the end of the 1980/81 school year. Since 1981 the building served as a diocesan education center. In March 2008 the building was renamed "Bildungshaus St. Bernhard - Wohnen & Tage".
