Bilene Macia (also Bilene-Macia or short Bilene ) is a district in the province of Gaza in Mozambique with the administrative seat in the small town of Bilene . Its territory borders on the Chókwè district to the north, the Chibuto and Xai-Xai districts to the west, the Indian Ocean to the south and the Manhiça and Moamba districts of the Maputo province to the east .

population

The Bilene Macia district is 2,157 square kilometers and in 2005 had a population of 164,103 people, which corresponds to a population density of 77 people per square kilometer. Compared to the 1997 census - at that time there were 133,173 people in the Matutuíne district - the population has increased by 23 percent. The population is on average very young and female, around 43 percent of all residents are under 15 years of age, 57 percent of all residents are female. The living situation of the people is predominantly rural; around 20 percent live in urbanized areas.

Facilities and services

There are 93 schools in the Matutuíne district, 76 of which are primary schools ( escolas do ensino primário ). There are eleven health centers and a rural hospital ("Hospital Rural") for the medical care of the population of the district.

Due to the economic importance of the seaside resort of Bilene, most of the facilities are concentrated in the seaside resort. Among other things, the district has two branches of the Mozambican bank Banco BCI (each in Macia and Bilene), one branch of the Barclays Moçambique (in Macia) and two of the Millennium Bim (each in Bilene and Macia). Branches of the state-owned Correios de Moçambique are also located in both Macia and Bilene.

Administrative division

The Bilene Macia district is divided into six administrative posts ( postos administrativos ):

  • Chissano , with the localities of Chissano, Chicota, Chimondzo, Incaia and Licilo
  • Macuane , with the localities of Macuane, Olombe and Zimbene
  • Mazivila , with the localities Mazivila, Tuane and Chitlango
  • Messano , with the localities of Messano and Magul
  • Praia do Bilene
  • Vila da Macia

The place Macia was elevated to a Munizip ( município ) in 2008 , Praia de Bilene since May 2013. This means that both places have more autonomous self-government rights and the populations can, among other things, determine their local administrations themselves in local elections. Both places are ruled by the mayors of FRELIMO , in Praia de Bilene Mufundisse Chilende, in Macia Reginaldo Mariquele.

economy

The seaside resort of Praia de Bilene is a significant economic factor in the Bilene-Macia district.

Economically, the district is mainly shaped by tourism. Bilene is one of the most famous seaside resorts in southern Mozambique and is a popular place for weekend trips, especially among capital city dwellers. Away from the national road and the seaside resort, agriculture dominates, primarily for the purpose of subsistence farming. Few products are sold in the main markets of Xai-Xai and Maputo.

traffic

The most important traffic artery of the district is the transverse national road EN1 , which runs from Mozambique from south to north. The place Macia is located directly on the national road. From Macia a side road leads south to Bilene on the Indian Ocean. There is also a connection road to the north to the larger neighboring town of Chókwè (EN101).

There is an airfield for small aircraft in Bilene.
