William Helmer "Bill" Bakke (born November 20, 1946 in Menomonie ) is a former American ski jumper and ski jumping coach.

Career

Bakke, who was also active as a cyclist in the summer, made his first international appearance at the age of 21 at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble . There he reached rank 40 on the normal hill and rank 34 on the large hill. At the Four Hills Tournament 1969/70 he jumped in Oberstdorf on rank 38, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on rank 40, in Innsbruck on rank 70 and in Bischofshofen again on rank 38. In the end, he finished 41st with 750.9 points.

At the US Championships in 1970 on Silver Mine Hill in Eau Claire , he won his first and only national title.

In the Four Hills Tournament 1970/71 he was able to increase his performance slightly and in the end he finished 39th with 767.4. He finished 30th in Oberstdorf, his best individual placement.

After his playing career, Bakke became an assistant coach with the US team before he worked as the head coach for the Canadian national team. He settled in Calgary and also became managing director of Canada Olympic Park , which was built for the 1988 Winter Olympics .
