from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bill Miller (actually William Preston Miller ; born February 22, 1930 in Lawnside , New Jersey , † October 27, 2016 in Apache Junction , Arizona ) was an American javelin thrower who was successful in the early 1950s.

He was able to place four times in the American championships:

year 1950 1951 1952 1953
Expanse 219-6.125 (2.) 233-10 (2.) 236-1 MASTER 235-5.50 (3.)

Miller took part in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. He exceeded the required qualification distance of 64 m in the first attempt with a throw over 64.81 m. In the final, he increased significantly and, like his compatriot Cy Young, landed three throws beyond the 70 m mark:

  • Miller: 72.46-71.65-70.45
  • Young: 73.78-72.80-71.90

With that, Miller won the silver medal behind Young. For the Finns, who are used to success, only the bronze medal remained this time, although Toivo Hyytiäinen had achieved distances over 70 m in five of his six final throws (best distance 71.89 m).
