Karl Friedrich Köppen (born April 26, 1808 in Nieder-Goerne , Osterburg district in the Altmark , † April 26, 1863 in Berlin ) was a German teacher , political journalist , young Hegelian and historian .

Life

Köppen comes from a pastor's family in Altmark. He studied theology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin from 1827 to 1831 , but later turned to the religion-critical Young Hegelianism . After studying and serving in the military, he became a teacher at the Dorotheenstädtische Realschule in Berlin in 1833 . In 1837 he met Karl Marx and formed a close friendship with him. From 1840 he became one of the most active contributors to the Halle Yearbooks published by Arnold Ruge (from 1841: German Yearbooks ). He has written numerous reviews of political and scientific literature. In accordance with contemporary journalistic practice, his reviews are strongly influenced by his own statements. Köppen campaigned for a renewal of the Enlightenment and was an opponent of classical literature, idealistic philosophy and romanticism.
