William Harold Ponsford MBE (born October 19, 1900 Melbourne , Australia , † April 6, 1991 in Kyneton , Australia) was an Australian cricketer . In 1935 he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year .

Career

Bill Ponsford played a total of 162 first-class cricket matches during his career , in which he scored a total of 13,819 runs (65.18 runs per wicket ). He completed most of the first-class matches for the Victoria team. Two times he was able to improve the record for the most runs scored in a first-class innings. The first record he set in February 1923 in a match against Tasmania, in which he improved Archie MacLaren's 27-year record from 424 to 429 runs. In 1927 he improved his own record in a match against Queensland, in which he scored 437 runs. Besides Brian Lara, he is the only cricketer who was able to achieve at least 400 runs in two first-class matches. For the Australian team , Bill Ponsford played 29 tests in which he scored 2,122 runs (48.22 runs per wicket). He made his test debut in December 1924 against England in Sydney . His last appearance in a test was against England in August 1934.
