The Monteverde Biological Reserve (Reserva Biológica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde) is a protected area in Costa Rica . It is an area of about 5,000 hectares with immigrant green tropical cloud forests .

history

Much of what is now the reserve was originally acquired by a group of American Quakers who immigrated there in 1951. They wanted to settle here in order to avoid participating in the Korean War , as they refuse any military service according to their beliefs . From 1972, parts of the area were endangered by illegal settlers. With this in mind, George Powell, a local scientist, and parts of the Quaker community and environmental organizations joined forces and purchased an area of 328 hectares. The land acquired in this way was placed under the administration of the Centro Científíco Tropical ( Tropical Science Center). The reserve has been continuously expanded through donations and further supply of land to the Quaker community. In 1989 the area reached its current size of around 5,000 hectares.

Characteristics

The reserve is located on the slopes of a mountain range in central Costa Rica. It includes several different habitats. It is dominated by the cloud forest.

flora

Around 3,000 of the 9,000 plant species native to Costa Rica are found in the Monteverde Conservation Area. These include 755 different tree species. The trees and other plants are largely covered with epiphytes . With 29 percent of the plant species, the epiphytes are among the most species-rich in the reserve. The area is also home to over 500 species of orchids , 34 of which were unknown until they were discovered in the reserve. 10 percent of the plant species are found exclusively in this area, e.g. B. the Podocarpus Monteverdeensis, a conifer .

fauna

169 species of amphibians and reptiles live in the reserve . The 60 amphibian species include the sneak , frog and tailed amphibian . Numerous lizard and snake species can be found among the reptile species . Many mammals and birds are also native to the area. In addition to bats , u. a. also monkeys , tapirs , umbilical pigs , species of cats and agoutis among the inhabitants. The reserve is also home to bird species such as the quetzal and the three-lobed kotinga . You can also observe species such as the leek arassari , the ivory parakeet , the violet hummingbird and the Urutau day sleeper . The sanctuary is also located on a major migratory route, which is why numerous species can be observed there during bird migration, which have their breeding area in North America. For example, you can see the broad-winged buzzard , vireos and wood warbler here . The reserve is also home to tangerines and organists .

The reserve became known, among other things, for the only global occurrence of the golden toad . However, this species of toad, which only lives in Monteverde, died out in 1989 for unknown reasons.
