Bioma Pampa-Quebradas del Norte is a biosphere reserve in Uruguay that extends over an area of 110,882 hectares . It consists of a mosaic of different ecosystems and is protected by UNESCO . The region has held the title since 2014 and tries to be a role model in the areas of sustainable land use, protection of ecosystems and preservation of local traditions. The area is in the Rivera department on the border with Brazil . The core zone of the reserve is also a national park and a popular tourist destination. The boundaries of the reserve are: in the north the dividing line with Brazil from the city of Rivera to the locality of Masoller , in the west the turning point and the border between the departments of Rivera and Artigas , in the southwest the Arroyo Laureles , in the east the border between the departments of Rivera and Tacuarembó and east of the railway line and the Río Tacuarembó .

Flora and fauna

The entire biosphere reserve has great biodiversity and serves as a corridor for the entry of species of subtropical origin into the area of Uruguay. Nowadays one can find many otherwise rarely occurring amphibians and reptiles . The reserve combines unique landscape features with the mosaic of different ecosystems that form the habitat for countless species of flora and fauna . Inside the reserve, the main mountain of the canyon can be highlighted with a subtropical jungle structure and associated fauna along with the scenic beauty. The Pampa - biome characterized many bird species by its wealth of grass species and its contribution to the breeding process. It is also the southernmost relic of tropical flora from the Atlantic forest. However, the outer zones are mainly characterized by active forestry, which should, however, take place in harmony with nature.

flora

The predominant vegetation in the region corresponds to winter pastures and bushes. Trees and bushes predominate on the slopes, and the composition of the species can be very different in their various positions. Due to the abundance of water in the gorges, trees can survive here, even in the hot Uruguayan summer, which you won't find anywhere else in the country.

Biodiversity of Species

A variety of different species can be found throughout the reserve. 22 species of amphibians (almost 50% of those registered nationally), 41 species of reptiles (62% of those registered nationally), 173 species of birds (40% of those registered nationally) and 31 species of mammals (27% of those registered nationally) were detected. These species are all found in the national park. Apart from that, some of the species in the reserve are registered as priority species for conservation, such as the tatu cerreta and the rattlesnake viper.

tourism

The biosphere reserve has so far been difficult to find locally and for tourists. Hardly any of the residents of Rivera have heard of the reserve. One of the main reasons for this is that the reserve has only existed since 2014. The Valle del Lunarejo, on the other hand, is one of the most famous attractions of Uruguay and is visited by many thousands of tourists every year. There is also a visitor center with several park rangers who take care of the core area.
